Featured defensive training

Begin with the responsibility. Build the skill.

CDS offers practical instruction for people considering a defensive tool, new owners who need a sound foundation, and experienced students who want to strengthen safe habits and judgment. Course availability, prerequisites, range requirements, permits, licensing, and legally required training vary by jurisdiction and will be confirmed before enrollment.

Armed responsibility

Concealed Carry and Responsible Armed Defense

This course is intended for law-abiding adults who are considering concealed carry, preparing for a permit or license where required, or seeking a stronger foundation for carrying a firearm responsibly. Principal subjects include handgun safety, concealed-carry considerations, situational awareness, conflict avoidance, the psychology of violent encounters, lawful defensive decision-making, and preparation for the aftermath of a defensive incident. Instruction reinforces that carrying a firearm creates continuing responsibilities for safe handling, secure storage, sound judgment, restraint, and ongoing practice. Completion does not by itself guarantee a permit or satisfy every jurisdiction’s licensing requirements.

Safe handgun foundation

Basic Handgun and Shooting Fundamentals

Designed for first-time shooters, new owners, students returning after time away, and anyone who wants to correct gaps in the fundamentals. The course introduces the safe handling and operation of handguns, including revolvers and semi-automatic pistols; firearm and ammunition basics; loading and unloading; grip, stance, sight alignment, trigger control, and follow-through; range procedures; storage; maintenance; and responsible practice. Classroom and live-fire elements are matched to the course location and student experience. The purpose is to develop safe, repeatable habits—not speed or advanced defensive tactics.

Alternatives to firearms

Less-Lethal Defensive Options

This course is for people who want defensive options beyond firearms or who need an additional level of protection appropriate to their responsibilities and environment. Students are introduced to pepper spray, ballistic launchers, electronic stunning devices, and Tasers, with attention to how the tools differ, safe carry and storage, accessibility, operating limitations, deployment considerations, conflict avoidance, lawful use, and what to do after an incident. Less-lethal does not mean harmless: every tool requires responsible selection, product-specific training, good judgment, and respect for its risks. Possession, carry, use, age limits, permits, and prohibited locations vary by jurisdiction.

Prepared everyday carry

EDC Sling Bag Preparedness & Use

This hands-on course teaches students how to organize, carry, inspect, and responsibly use a compact everyday-carry sling system. Instruction addresses the notepad, tactical pen and glass breaker, multi-mode flashlight, emergency utility cutter, pepper spray, and space for a telephone and wallet. Students examine accessibility, retention, lawful possession, safe storage, maintenance, verbal communication, emergency cutting, illumination, note taking, escape-oriented decision-making, and product-specific practice. The bag is a preparedness system—not a guarantee of safety or a substitute for judgment, avoidance, medical training, or legal education.
